DESMOND CHILD AND ROUGE
“Our Love is Insane” was the first charting single for my Capitol Recording group, Desmond Child and Rouge. With a cool, quirky bass line, great players and some beautiful vocal and instrumental arrangements, we were leading the first wave of the crossover R&B/ Rock sound, ahead of the many others that followed. Famous arranger, Charlie Calello and top NY studio musicians including Paul Shaffer on keys, Allen Schwartzberg on drums, Neil Jason on bass and the late Jimmy Maelen on percussion brought this funky piece to life.
We toured the country for the first LP, and the club version of “Our Love is Insane” played in all the East Coast dance clubs for the next twenty years! We recorded a second, more rock-leaning record the same year titled Runners in the Night, which included this second track, “My Heart’s On Fire”. Desmond Child and Rouge started as best friends making a go of it in NYC. We wrote, arranged and performed songs and sketches, played nearly every club in NYC and built a solid following that soon garnered us a recording contract with Capitol Records.

Beacon Theatre, NYC,
One of Desmond Child and Rouge’s most significant inspirations was the great singer-songwriter, Laura Nyro, and in particular her Gonna Take a Miracle record of covers of Motown and early Pop/R&B songs performed with the fabulous vocal group. La Belle. After many years, we had the great fortune to have met and befriended Laura and her son, Gil in Los Angeles. When Laura passed, DC&R was invited to join a star-studded tribute to her at the legendary Beacon Theater in NYC. It was a poignant night of love and honoring of this hughly influential artist, and one of the most meaningful experiences of our time together as a group. This is one of our favorite Laura songs from her Christmas and the Beads of Sweat album. The recording was an audience bootleg since no others were planned. This photo group photo is DC&R backstage at the Beacon.
