We parted ways as a band but continued workin on many projects together through the years. “A vocal quartet featuring Desmond Child, Maria Vidal, Diana Grasselli and Myriam Valle, DC&R released two albums at the tail-end of the ‘70s that feature some of the most amazingly vivid lyrics and intricate vocal harmonies ever committed to vinyl.”- Dave Reynolds, LouderSound

The tragic news of the unfortunate cycling accident that claimed Tanya’s life at age 28 was a devastating and life-altering event for us all. She continues to sing in all the hearts who were blessed to have known her and her unstoppable spirit.

Maya Winterherd

There is no one who crosses paths with her that doesn’t want to keep walking along in her presence. She has been a dear friend, confidant and advisor to me and my music projects for over 20 years. Her love, support and steadfast friendship through the years have been nourishment on all kinds of levels, especially since she loves to throw lavish and delicious dinner parties for all her closest friends and family!
"She had an excellent way of working with voices that were in trouble, helping them to recover their unique sound and do it in a healthy way," he said. "She was admired and beloved by the singing community, and rightly so." - Phillip Brunelle, founder of VocalEssence
In Memory of Emma Small
"She had a wonderful sense of what a voice could be, its potential," Penning said. "On the human side, the voice is such a vulnerable instrument, and she was empathetic, caring and compassionate." - Rick Penning, a former student and later a colleague at Macalester College,
The late Emma Small was a much loved opera singer and voice instructor and one of my first vocal mentors in Minnesota. She passed away suddenly in 2019 at age 85. I was shocked and devastated as everyone who knew and adored her was. She altered the course of our lives with her dedicated, hands-on, soulful, technique-based and elegant approach to studying the art of singing.
Emma was known for her work with the Minnesota Opera and for coaching many of the singers who came through town to perform with them. She had a beautiful, rich mezzo and was a wonderful pianist as well. Emma may have been small in stature but she was a huge, fiery force with a laugh and irreverence that could instantly transmute doubt and hesitation into courage and perseverance. She was direct and honest but always kind. I miss her so much.

An Opera Company
As the Twin Cities’ boldest opera company, guided by our core vision of Art To Action, An Opera Company returns opera to its original purpose: a platform for civic discourse that amplifies voices historically pushed to the margins. Justin Spenner and Kelly Turpin are two of the most elegant, fun and lovely people I know and I am delighted to call them friends. On top of the innovative, groundbreaking perspectives on this most beloved, classical singing form, I couldn’t be more proud of them for all they have offered me, Chanson Voice and Music Academy, TVV and the many talented artists in our communities!
